What your website says is as important as how it looks.

Writing for websites is different to other styles of writing. Its different to writing a brochure or sales catalogue. Its definitely different to writing a book. Its also very different to writing an essay.

The aim is to keep webpage copy concise, search engine optimised and consistent. The tricky thing about web copy is that it needs to connect with a wide variety of people; yet every time someone reads it, they need to feel that your brand is speaking just to them.

Remember that users scan the page, look for the most relevant parts of the webpage and ignore everything else.

So what can you do to keep users on your site and to keep reading your content?

  • Try to keep sentences short and succinct.
  • Leave long paragraphs to novelists two or three sentences are enough.
  • Use headings to help people skim the page and find the content they are interested in.
  • Use plenty of paragraph breaks and bullets to make your copy visually less imposing.
  • Use everyday language to engage with as wide an audience as possible avoid jargon or corporate speak.
  • Use short words such as help vs. assist or facilitate.
  • Dont focus on yourself instead focus on what you can do for your customer.Address the readers directly by using You and Your.
  • Always use images images including charts, graphs and infographics can also be used to make the content visually more interesting.
  • Call to Action Your call to action is one of the most important aspects in your website where you tell the visitors what to do in your website. Such as Contact Me or If you found this interesting please share!
